…And Last I Checked This Was A Western Country

Sorry for your loss, but you’re not bigger than the Constitution.

Debra Burlingame, whose brother Charles Burlingame was the pilot of the jetliner that crashed into the Pentagon and who serves on the board of Keep America Safe, agreed that there is an emotional component but rejected the notion that the mosque issue is a “feelings” concept instead of part of a larger debate about different cultures and how the U.S. should engage with Muslim culture within the country.

“I do ascribe to the ‘clash of civilizations’ theory now,” said Burlingame, who has been among the main voices questioning the funding behind the proposed mosque, and the intents of Feisal Abdul Rauf, the imam behind it. She said, as she did after Obama’s speech, that many Muslims have practiced peacefully in the U.S. before and after the attacks, but that Rauf has made statements supporting radical elements of Islam, and that the location was chosen to be provocative.

She criticized those, mostly led by Mayor Michael Bloomberg, who are defending the project under freedom of religion, saying, “That’s a Western concept.”

Right?! It just makes my fucking brain hurt. Abdul Rauf is AN AMERICAN CITIZEN. During the Bush years he was what I’ve seen described as a “partner for peace” or words to the effect; I’ve lost track of the article and I neglected to look up what it meant, but I gather at the very least he was held up as an example of bridging the civilization gap — which, of course is HIS STATED INTENTION in building Cordoba house. Now these days he’s Omar Abdul-Rahman, bin Laden, Saddam, Khalid Mohammed, and a little bit of Kareem Abdul-Jabbar* for good measure, and the entire basis for that is apparently that he a) seems to have this crazy idea that arming and training fundamentalist lunatics might somehow lead to trained, armed fundamentalist lunatics continuing to exist at some point in the future, and b) referred to the Hamas situation as “complicated” rather than flatly denouncing them — and of course, subsequently being held up in the press as a talking pullstring puppet. “Even the Muslim Imam Feisal Abdul Rauf believes…” etc.

As you can probably tell this whole Cordoba thing is really getting to me. I guess I just can’t fuckin’ tolerate a bully, especially when the bully is a collective group of people who go on and on for years about how they “aren’t at war with Islam; only radical Islam” or etc. before turning around and shitting on the very sort’ve guy they pretend to view as a role model. We’re Americans and that just isn’t how we roll. Desire for peace? Bridge the cultural gap? Defuse al-Qa’ida and others like them by showing young Muslims that America is not actually the Great Satan? Fuck off. Brown skin, funny name, weird religion. Get outta my country raghead, you aren’t welcome here.

The darkness of our souls is matched only by the blackness of our hearts. If there is a reckoning then we are truly damned.
